Apple's iPhone 5s Is The Dominant Smartphone In Japan

BCN is a Japanese company that tracks consumer electronic device sales in Japan and for the month of February its survey has the iPhone 5s capturing a 44.5% market share of the smartphone market with the 5c at 5.9%. The combined iPhone share of 50.4% is an increase from 44.0% in December. (Note that my family and I own Apple AAPL -1.12% shares and I have sold put options, which is a bullish trade).

 

 

iPhone 5s is the dominant Japanese smartphone

 

The iPhone 5s held the top 6 smartphone rankings during February while the model 5c has disappeared from the top ten spots. When compared to December the 5s also captured the number 3 and 5 share positions but lost a bit in the teens. The 5c had three of the top 10 positions in December but its best showing in February was at #14. For the months of December and February the various iPhones by models, storage capacity and carriers held the following positions:

Japan generates over 8% of Apple’s total revenue and 11% of profit

In fiscal 2013 Japan generated $13.5 billion or 7.9% of Apple’s total revenue. It had the highest growth rate of any geography along with the highest operating margin at 50.7%.

In the December 2013 quarter it generated almost $5 billion in revenue or 8.6% of total revenue. It grew over 11% year over year and again had the highest operating margin at 48.1%, generating 11.6% of total operating income before corporate expenses.

Having NTT DoCoMo selling iPhones Apple should be able to continue good revenue and profit growth in Japan for at least the remainder of fiscal 2014.
